This page will be updated once a week with the latest news from the "National Skydiving League". Special thanks to Kurt Gaebel, founder of the league and webmaster of its web site. |
October 2, 2000Arizona Airspeed Vertical will go to Spain. If it were up to the fans and the spectators in Perris, three teams would be on first place at the U.S. Nationals in the Open Class. The competition between Airspeed Vertical, FX and DeLand PD Blue was so exciting that each of the teams actually deserved a gold medal. However, in sports there is always only one winner. And the winner in Perris is Arizona Airspeed Vertical. Even though, FX and DeLand PD Blue tried to make it as hard as possible for Vertical, the Airspeed 2000 squad never seemed to leave a doubt that they would become the 2000 champions. |

If a meet could be considered flawless, it was Vertical showing all other teams how this can be done. Of course, teams will always find room for improvements and hardly admit that a jump was perfect. However, Vertical went through all ten rounds without a major mistake. Actually, Vertical was not the only team. PD Blue could also claim that they had a very solid and great performance through the whole meet. For PD Blue, it just was not quite enough to beat the Airspeed pros. This meet seemed to come one year too early for the youngest team in the Open Class. After the first year on a full-time foundation as competitors, Blue came as far as possible. Hopefully, PD Blue will continue to gain from their experiences on the top level of the world and reach for the gold again next year and in two years.
FX got even closer to Vertical than PD Blue. After eight rounds, FX was only two points behind Vertical. These two points were close enough for FX if they could maintain this little difference until round ten where a pure random sequence was waiting for their speed. However, disaster struck in round nine. A bad exit, followed by a penalty and more problems during the sequence left FX five points behind Vertical just in this round. It was over. The team with the highest potential but the least competition practice this year melted down and headed into a heartbreaking, tearful and hopeless chase in the last round of the meet. Experts will spend long nights discussing the reasons for the FX disaster.
Vertical will now represent the United States at the World Championship in 2001 in Spain. In Perris, they defeated their biggest rivals for the gold medal next year, France Perris Maubeuge and DeLand Norgies. However, the leaderboard after ten rounds is showing how close the race will be in Spain. Perris Maubeuge and DeLand Norgies considered this meet just as a training competition on their way to Spain. Already at the World Cup 2000 in November in Eloy, they are
expecting to make it even more difficult for the new U.S. team as in Perris. Check out all scores at the U.S. Nationals page at www.nationals.com. |

September 28, 2000The youngest league director of the National Skydiving League is Beth Murray. She took the responsibility and the action to launch the first season of the New England Skydiving League this year. The league just completed the 2000 season after four successful meets. Teams and competitors in the New England area appreciated her efforts and her way how to make things happen in her first year. Murray is a very young skydiver. She started the New England Skydiving League with just about 40 jumps total under her belt. Her enthusiasm for her new passion and the sport was so strong that she was not too shy to take on the challenge of the league project. |
NSL President Kurt Gaebel and Murray met for the first time in the winter prior to the first season after talking a few times on the phone. Gaebel had already been in touch with Paula Philbrook of the Pepperell Skydive Center since 1997 discussing a new league in the area. Philbrook was too busy to take on a project like this. When Murray heard of the potential of a league and thought about the see pic benefits for skydiving and competition in her area, she contacted Gaebel in Florida. Not much later, they met during her winter skydiving vacation.
Murray expressed her positive attitude toward the sport and her new passion in this very early conversation with Gaebel. She explained her situation: "I recently received my A license, so I'm fairly new at this sport. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about skydiving but would also like to 'give' back to the sport. I realize that a great deal of volunteer hours must go into starting and maintaining a successful league." She has been "giving back" fully as the success of her first year is showing.
Murray received help and advice from Matt Landel, who is a team member of Pepperell Expedition. They joined forces early this year to prepare the first NESL season. Throughout this season, Murray coordinated the meets, judges, the schedule, the prizes, beer at the end of meets, food at the DZ without food on the premises, and for the last meet, got engraved mugs for all competitors, and prizes from the SkyVenture wind tunnel in Orlando, as if she was a veteran skydiver and organizer. Last Saturday, after the last NESL Meet, everyone thanked her with hugs and kisses. Apparently, Murray has been too busy to do the funnest part of the whole league: compete with her own team. She has already become team member of a local team. And she is looking forward to participate next season. Congratulations for a successful first season. |
September 26, 2000The Atlanta Skydiving Center prepares for the NSL Playoffs. Time is running quickly... the NSL Playoffs 2000 Eastern Skies are just less than four weeks away. Due to the growth of the National Skydiving League, the NSL headquarters decided to run playoffs prior to the championship event for the first time this year. The NSL Playoffs 2000 Eastern Skies will be hosted by the Atlanta Skydiving Center in Cedartown, Georgia. Skydive Dallas will be the host for the Western Skies playoffs. Sixteen teams will qualify for each of the playoffs. The qualification rules are posted at the NSL rules page. The qualified teams will compete for the NSL Championship Western and Eastern Skies. They will also race for the eight slots at each of the playoffs, which will win tickets for the NSL Championship 2000.
As at last year's NSL Championship, the competition format will again include two different events. The six qualification rounds for the tickets to the NSL Championship 2000 in DeLand will apply the traditional competition format. The championship rounds for the title of the Western/Eastern Skies Champion 2000 will be races against the clock and one other team in the championship bracket for elimination and advance to the next round.
Cary Quattrocchi and Ben Butler, owners of the Atlanta Skydiving Center, are looking forward to this event. They have been building a modern and progressive skydiving center in the last two years. They recently built brand new facilities paying special attention to the needs of teams, training and the upcoming competition. Quattrocchi and Butler have the goal to make the NSL Playoffs 2000 most successful and a signature event for their hosting skills. To serve this goal, they will do everything possible to welcome the teams and make them feel special for the duration of the event. A Superotter is already lined up for the event, which will be available exclusively for the competition.
Quattrocchi and Butler hosted a meeting with Eastern Skies Coordinator Glen Hauenstein and NSL President Kurt Gaebel in Cedartown. Plans were made, details were worked on, preparations were started. All parties left the meeting highly motivated and looking forward to the event. ...more on Skydive League's web site |
